  • Description

The luxury liner "Achilleus" was the first ship to pass through the re-opened Corinth Canal, - the waterway dividing the Peloponnese Peninsular and the Greek mainland.

She passed through the Canal June 10, after six weeks had been spent clearing the waterway of the landslide of huge rocks and earth, which tumbled from the high north side after prolonged infiltration of rainwater.

With her sister ship "Agamemnon", the "Achilleus" is the largest ship to use the Canal: the two vessels were specially constructed to be able to use the five-mile long, French-built waterway.

The Canal reduces shipping times between the Ionian and Aegean Seas by two to three days, and with its steep, clean-cut banks is one of the many attractions for sightseers in Greece. The Canal is spanned by a combined road and rail bridge.
