  • Description

Mr. John Vorster, Prime Minister of the Republic of South Africa, arrived in Lisbon on Thursday, June 4, at the start of a four-day official visit to Portugal, the first country on his four-nation itinerary. He will also visit Spain, France and Switzerland.

Mr. Vorster is accompanied by his wife and the South African Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Hilgard Muller. During his four-day stay in Lisbon, the South African leader will have talks with the Portuguese Prime Minister Doctor Marcello Caetano.

This is Mr. Vorster's first trip to Europe. Two weeks ago he visited Malawi and Rhodesia.

After arriving at the airport, Mr. Vorster drove to his hotel where he spent the morning resting after his long air journey. Then he had a briefing with officials from the South African Embassy about his upcoming talks with Dr. Caetano, the first of which is scheduled for Friday. During the afternoon, the South African prime Minister paid a courtesy call on the Portuguese President Amerigo Thomaz.

Speaking to South African correspondents after his first day in Lisbon, Prime Minister Vorster said that his European tour was an informal and friendly visit to renew and strengthen the good relations between South Africa and other countries.
