Background: The world's top rally drives left London this afternoon (Saturday) at the start of the Royal Automobile Club's 2,300 mile (3,700 k.m.) five-day tour of Britain. The cars departed in teeming rain -- a bitter foretaste of the weather predicted for later in the rally. The drives have been warned to expect snow, sleet and ice in northern areas of Britain.

More than 200 cars have been entered in the rally. The cars are expected in the middle of Scotland early tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon. They will then begin the return journey southwards, covering almost the entire west coast.

The rally is one of the most keenly contested Britain motor rallies in recent years, with a European representation. The competitors are vying for the European Rally Championship for manufacturers and the RAC Rally Championship for drivers. The top contenders are the West German Porsche team now leading the European championship with 27 points, and the French Alpine Renaults, with 24 points.
