THE ASHES OF JEAN MOULIN WERE TAKEN IN TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION TODAY (FRIDAY) TO THE PANTHEON, RESTING PLACE OF FRANCE'S GREAT HISTORICAL FIGURES.

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE PAID HOMAGE TO THE MEMORY OF MOULIN IN A CEREMONY IN THE DARKENED CRYPT OF A CEMETERY IN EASTERN PARIS WHERE THE ASHES HAVE REMAINED SINCE HE DIED. THE PRESIDENT STOOD AT THE SALUTE IN FRONT OF THE SILVER-STUDDED URN. LATER, A CORTEGE SLOWLY TOOK THE ASHES TO THE CHAPEL FOR RESISTANCE HEROES ON THE ILE DE LA CITE WHERE PARISIENS FILED PAST FOR SIX HOURS TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS.

A FAMOUS RESISTANCE FIGHTER, JEAN MOULIN WAS PREFECT OF CHARTRES WHEN THE GERMANS INVADED FRANCE. HE WAS BEATEN IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE HIM SIGN A PROTOCOL STATING ATROCITIES IN THE AREA HAD BEEN COMMITTED BY FRENCH SENEGALESE TROOPS. HE REFUSED AND ATTEMPTED TO KILL HIMSELF BY CUTTING HIS THROAT, AND WAS THEN RELEASED.

HE ESCAPED TO BRITAIN, RETURNING LATER TO FRANCE IN 1941 AS GENERAL DE GAULLE'S PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE WITH ORDERS TO UNIFY VARIOUS FRENCH RESISTANCE MOVEMENTS. BETRAYED IN 1943 HE WAS BADLY TORTURED AND DIED ON HIS WAY TO BERLIN.
