    The Association of West and Central African National Maritime Companies, created under a regional charter signed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in May 1975, held its first meeting in Abidjan on Thursday (6 May).

    The national shipping companies of Ghana, Cameroun, Benin, Togo, the central African Republic, Senegal, Zaire, Mauritania, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast were represented at the conference, which follows a regional ministerial meeting in Douala, Cameroun, last February.

    The West and Central African Maritime Transport Ministers decided at their meeting in Cameroun to restructure specialised regional organisations in an effort to assume greater responsibility for transportation to and from African ports.

    Discussions at the Abidjan meeting centred on proposed statutes for the association, co-ordination of action by the shipping companies in the fields of personnel training, representation abroad, pools, technical studies and relations with shipping conferences.

    The meeting was held under the chairmanship of The Cameroun Minister of Transport, Mr. John Mkengong Monie and was opened by Mr. Auguste Denise, the Ivory Coast Minister of State.

    SYNOPSIS: The Ivory Coast is economically the most important successor state of the former French West African Territories and the port and dockside areas of the capital, Abidjan, is one of the busiest trading zone in West Africa. On Thursday the Association of West and Central African National Maritime Companies held its first meeting in Abidjan.

    The conference took place at the Stabilisation Fund headquarters, with representatives of the national shipping companies of ten West and Central African nations taking part. It was opened by the Ivory Coast Minister of State, Monsieur Auguste Denise.

    Delegates from Ghana, Cameroun, Benin, Togo, the Central African Republic, Senegal, Zaire, Mauritania, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast heard speeches by experts int he field of maritime communications-including one by the Ivory Coast Secretary of State for the Navy, Monsieur Lamine Fadika. Discussions at the meeting centred on proposed statutes for the Association, co-ordination of action by the shipping companies in various spheres and relations with shipping conferences.
