Background: Tennis -- and Sweden's Bjorn borg routed Guillermo Vilas of Argentina 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in Paris on Sunday (11 June) to win the men's singles title in the French Open Championships. It was a convincing performance by the young Swede, who has won the same title twice before.

SYNOPSIS: 5-3 up in the third set, and Borg was serving for the Championship. Vilas, the defending champion, lost the first two sets in rapid succession and seemed out of touch.

Apart from one or two errors, Borg repeated the sort of play that had given him the Italian men's title two weeks previously. His strong fierce serving force his opponent to play deep on the base line.

A back and passing shot gave Borg a 30-love lead.

More than 12,000 peoples packed into the centre court for the contest. And although Borg was always well on top, they were entertained to some fine rallies.

It was Vilas who won the next point, after forcing his opponent wide on the baseline. the score, 30-15 to Borg.

Borg has had a fine year since he won the men's singles title at Wimbledon last June. His heavy top spin had Vilas struggling to counter on the base-line. And after a long rally the mistake was made, giving Borg a sight at the title with two championship points.

So, it was Borg serving for the 210,000 Franc (42,000 U.S. dollar) first prize....
And his opponent's error gave him game, set and championship. He won in 109 minutes, and now looks a hot favourite to win Wimbledon for the third consecutive year, later this month.
