Background: After the drab goalless draw between West Germany and Poland which opened the World Cup finals, Italy and France went on to produce a match with both teams playing open attacking football.
SYNOPSIS: Within the first minute France, in white shirts, attacked. After a throw-out from the goalkeeper Didier took the ball down the left, his centre found Lacombe who headed past Zoff in the Italian goal and France were one up.
But the Italians, who have been struggling to find their form, countered -- this header by Roberto Bettega just going wide.
Then Italy's attacking policies were rewarded. From the free kick the ball several times almost crossed the French line, eventually Paolo Rossi found the net to make the score one - all.
Back on level terms the Italians continued to attack, this effort by Benetti causing the French a few problems.
Italy came out in the second half determined to attack. Zaccarelli found a gap through the French defence to put Italy 2-1 ahead.
Then it was France's turn to attack. This shot by Bossis was just wide of the goal.
The French continued to pile on the pressure but the Italian defence remained firm. This shot by Rio was gathered by Zoff. And the Italians ran out winners by two goals to one.
