  • Description

One of the most important debates confronting the General Assembly began at the United Nations on Monday (18 October). Three separate resolutions have been submitted concerning the question of representation for the People's Republic of China and expulsion of Taiwan.

First in order of presentation is a resolution submitted by Albania. It calls for the admission of the People's Republic of China and the expulsion of Taiwan. A second resolution calls for the seating of Peking, while retaining Taiwan. The third resolution is a move to have any attempt to expel Taiwan declared an "important question" -- thus requiring a two-thirds majority for adoption.

Seating of the People's Republic of China and expulsion of Taiwan was advocated by Albanian Foreign Minister Nesti Nase. Algerian Foreign Minister Abdel Aziz Bouteflika seconded the resolution. On the first day of debate, six other delegates, including Canadian Ambassador Beaulne supported the resolution.

The Assembly is not expected to begin voting until lets next week.
