  • Description

THE GOVERNMENT IN GHANA IS LAUNCHING A VAST PROGRAMME AIMED AT INCREASING THE NATION'S WATER SUPPLY - PARTICULARLY IN THE RURAL AREAS.

ONE OF THE AREAS UNDER DEVELOPMENT IS IN THE ASHANTI REGION AT BARISKESE, 12 MILES NORTH WEST OF KUMASI. THE PROJECT WILL COST MORE THAN SEVEN MILLION NEW CEDIS AND IS BEING FINANCED BY A BRITISH COMPANY - GAMMON U.K. CONSORTIUM LTD.

THE SCHEME WILL AUGMENT THE EXISTING KUMASI WATER SUPPLY AND HELP TO ALLEVIATE A WATER SHORTAGE IN THE CITY. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO PROVIDE ABUNDANT WATER FOR NEIGHBOURING TOWNS AND VILLAGES. THE PROJECT WILL, WHEN COMPLETE, HAVE A CAPACITY OF 50 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER A DAY, AND EVEN THE FIRST STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION WILL PROVIDE AN OUTPUT OF 12 MILLION GALLONS.

THE DAM IS BEING BUILT ON THE RIVER OFIN AND WILL FORM A RESERVOIR NEARLY SIX MILES LONG. AND IN ORDER TO SAFEGUARD THE WATER THE ENTIRE AREA IS BEING CLEARED OF SCRUB AND TREES. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING FRESH WATER THE RESERVOIR WILL SUPPLY FRESH WATER FISHING.

MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF THE DAM WILL BE 62 FEET AND ITS LENGTH WILL BE 1,520 FEET - STATISTICS THAT WILL ENSURE IT A PLACE IN THE WORLD REGISTER OF HIGH DAMS. THE OFIN RIVER HAS BEEN DIVERTED THROUGH A DRAW-OFF TUNNEL WHILE THE DAM IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
