    BRITISH VOLUNTEERS, ONE OF THEM BLIND SINCE FOUR, ARE BUILDING A TRAINING CENTRE FOR BLIND FARMERS IN THE SOUTH ARABIAN DESERT STATE OF BEIHAN, 15 MILES (24 KMS) FROM THE YEMENI BORDER.

    THE CENTRE-THE WORK OF THE BRITISH VOLUNTARY SERVICE OVERSEAS-IS AT NAGUB, A TYPICAL SMALL DESERT TOWN, WITH AN AIRSTRIP BUT NO ROADS, OTHER THAN TRACKS THROUGH THE SANDS. SUPPLIES COME FROM ADEN, 250 MILES (400 KMS) AWAY.

    WHILE THE WORK GOES ON, HEAVY MACHINE GUNS AND ARMOURED CARS OF THE FEDERAL REGULAR ARMY GUARD THE NEARBY PALACE OF EMIR SALEH OF BEIHAN. LAST YEAR AN AIRCRAFT ROCKET ATTACK ON THE PALACE FAILED.

    RUNNING THE CENTRE WILL BE A LAY MISSIONARY OF THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND. HE AND HIS FAMILY AND THE OTHER VOLUNTEERS BEGAN CLEARING THE SITE THREE WEEKS AGO. HELPING IN THE WORK ARE THE R.A.F., TROOPS OF THE BRITISH AND FEDERAL ARMIES AND LOCAL WORKERS.
