Mr. K.H. Englund for the United Nations Development Programme signed an agreement for food assistance in Abidjan on Tuesday (22 December) with Mr. Aoussou Koffi of the Bandama Valley Authority.
The agreement covers the re-settlement of some 100,000 people due to be displayed from their homes as the waters rise behind the new dam at Kossou, in the south-west of the country. The dam is the responsibility of the Bandama Valley Authority.
Ivory Coast's second major port is to be constructed in the same region.
The U.N. Development Programme has already requisitioned more than 2 million dollars (920,000 Sterling) worth of food for this operation at the request of the Ivory Coast Government. The Bandama Valley authority has already received 300,000 dollars (125,000 Sterling) worth of aid by the U.N.
The long-term programmes for the region include the creation of new villages and fisheries, and diversification of local agriculture.
