Background: FORTY THOUSAND PEOPLE CHEERED WHILE FIRE-CRACKERS CRACKLED WHEN ACTING PRIME MINISTER WANG YUN-WU CUT A RIBBON TO OFFICIALLY OPEN TAIWAN'S NEW INTERNATIONAL PORT AT HUALIEN ON SEPTEMBER 2ND.

HUALIEN HARBOUR IS TAIWAN'S THIRD INTERNATIONAL PORT, WITH DEEP-WATER WHARVES CAPABLE OF HANDLING SEVERAL 10,000-TON VESSELS AT A TIME, AS WELL AS FREIGHTERS UP TO 3,000-TONS. RAILWAYS AND ROADS HAVE BEEN LAID CLOSE TO THE WHARVES, AFFORDING QUICK AND EFFICIENT HANDLING OPERATIONS.

OTHER FACILITIES OFFERED BY THE PORT ARE REPAIR SHOPS; A SLIPWAY CAPABLE OF HANDLING VESSELS UP TO 500-TONS; CRANES OF THE LATEST ELECTRIC TYPE; DREDGERS; AND WATER AND REVICTUALLING SERVICES.

FIRST STARTED AS A LOCAL PORT IN 1939, HUALIEN HANDLED ABOUT 200,000 TONS A YEAR: NOW IT HANDLES 300,000 TONS, IN SPITE OF BEING BADLY DAMAGED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. IT HAS BEEN THIS INCREASE WHICH HAS MADE A PLANNED EXPANSION PROGRAMME ESSENTIAL.
