oil and gas producer, Western Siberia is fast becoming a major producer of wood and is getting ready to develop its iron and non-ferrous ores deposits. The entire territory of Western Siberia will be developed as a single complex. One feature of this development will be the construction, over the next few years of several major petrochemical plants there.

The Baikal-Amur TIC, which covers an area of one million sq. km along the railway track bearing the same name, has a great future, even through the complex's overall potential has not yet been fully determined. The Baikal-Amur railway passes through areas rich in coal, copper, ores, natural gas deposits that will be developed in the next ten years.

The powerful Siberian rivers-the Angara and the Enisei -- will feed a series of major hydro-power plants which in turn will supply much-wanted energy for a network of large-scale power-consuming industries that will be included into the Angaro-Enisei TIC.

The South-Tajik Tic is somewhat different from other complexes in that it deals both with industrial and agricultural problems.

The complex approach to the development of the Eastern and Northern areas of Soviet Union helps cut down capital investments by about 20 per cent. It will also be of great use in dealing with such problems as the supply of the USSR national economy with energy and water resources. Scientists maintain that the Soviet economy will be adequately supplied with oil and natural gas until at least 2000. To meet the growing demand in water (industrial water consumption in the USSR jumped from 150 cubic km in 1965 to 300 in 1975, and the amount of water carried yearly by the largest European river Volga is in the area of 250 cubic km), new river will be "built" to infuse more water into the Volga and increase water supply in the Kazakh SSR.

At present the Soviet Union has prepared a general outline for the displacement of productive forces until 1900, and work is progress to prepare such an outline for the next en-year period until 2000.
