  • Description

Amid growing political uncertainty and economic deterioration, Argentina on Thursday (29 May) celebrated the 165th anniversary of the creation of its Army.

The colourful ceremonies took place at the Military College in Buenos Aires, where President Maria Estela Martinez de Peron reviewed the troops in the presence of the Commanders-in-chief of the Armed Forces -- including the new Army Commander, General Alberto Numa Laplane -- as well as prominent members of her Cabinet.

Mrs. Peron arrived and departed in a limousine escorted by grenadiers on horseback and reviewed her troops from an armoured personnel carrier.

During the Army Day ceremonies, General Laplane delivered a speech in which he pledged the military's continuing support of the country's Constitution and of its democratically elected civilian Government. His pledge was seen as particularly important in the light of mounting guerilla attacks throughout Argentina and a steeply climbing death toll as a result of political unrest.
