  • Description

Chickens which do not have feathers have been bred in California, as an experiment to see if they would lay bigger and better eggs.

The chickens were developed at the University of California by a women, Dr. Ursula Abbott. She reasoned that chickens use a lot of energy in growing feathers which they don't need. The theory was that naked chickens would be able to devote much more of their energy to laying bigger and better eggs.

The experiment, however, did not confirm the theory.

As it turned out, featherless chickens lay fewer and smaller eggs because they use a long more energy in keeping warm than they normally would growing feathers and they unfortunately become prone to ulcers.

The main accomplishment of this experiment, it is claimed, is that is has shown that naked chickens can survive in cold weather without feathers.
