TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 5: COL BAKER: "I think there's no question it enhance the capability of the Marine Corps, for improving response times to on-target and for flexibility of operations from amphibious ships, and that sort of thing, which we've never had in the past with a tactical aircraft, we've only had it with helicopters. We've been looking for an airplane like this for some number of years".

Background: In Washington the House of Representatives Armed Services committee on Friday (May 20) approved a request from the Pentagon for the purchase of another 30 British-made Harrier jump-jets. Last year the United States bough 18 of the aircraft for the Marine Corps.

This was the first time since 1916 the United States had bought a foreign-made aircraft for its armed forces.

Colonel Claude Baker, who commands the Marine's Harrier squadron, considers the aircraft, which can take off and land in very short distances, one of the major landmarks in aviation.
