  • Description

FIFTEEN PEOPLE DIED AND ABOUT 70 MORE WERE INJURED IN AN EARLY MORNING RAIL CRASH IN BELGIUM TODAY. THE CRASH HAPPENED 300 YARDS (METRES) OUTSIDE THE STATION AT THE SMALL STEEL MANUFACTURING TOWN OF LA LOUVIERE.

THE DAWN CRASH WAS BELGIUM'S WORST TRAIN ACCIDENT IN 15 YEARS. A SPOKESMAN FOR BELGIAN RAILWAYS SAID THE CRASH WAS CAUSED BY HUMAN ERROR. HE SAID THE DRIVER OF ONE TRAIN FAILED TO SEE A SIGNAL BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER AND POOR VISIBILITY, AS HE WAS PULLING OUT A LA LOUVIERE STATION HEADING FOR BRUSSELS; HIS TRAIN CROSSED THE TRACK AND CRASHED INTO THE FRONT OF ANOTHER TRAIN TRAVELLING TO GHENT.

ABOUT 1,500 PEOPLE WERE TRAVELLING TO WORK ON THE TWO TRAINS. WITNESSES SAID IT WAS SNOWING AT THE TIME, AND THEY SAW A THICK CLOUD OF DUST OVER THE CRASHED TRAINS. PEOPLE WERE RUNNING ALONG THE TRACK BLEEDING, HOLDING THEIR HANDS AND LIMBS, COLLAPSING AND MOANING.

MOST OF THE DEAD AND INJURED WERE IN THE FRONT CARRIAGE OF THE BRUSSELS TRAIN, WHICH PLOUGHED INTO THE BACK OF THE LOCOMOTIVE. POLICE AND FIREMEN STRUGGLING TO RELEASE PEOPLE TRAPPED IN THE WRECKAGE WERE HELPED BY WORKERS FROM A NEARBY STEEL WORKS. THE DRIVER OF THE BRUSSELS TRAIN WAS AMONG THE DEAD.

BOTH LOCOMOTIVES AND FOUR CARRIAGES WERE DERAILED.
