  • Description

Members of the new Greek government including the new Premier, Mr. Adamantios Androutsopoulos, military leaders and ordinary citizens all paid tribute on Monday (December 3) to those who died in the Greek civil war of 1944.

A memorial service for the dead, killed in the fighting against Communist forces who had overrun most of the country, was held at the headquarters of the Makriyianni Gendarmerie.

Among the crowd were many relatives of people who died in the battle of Makriyianni, a turning point in the struggle for Athens in 1944.

SYNOPSIS: The head of the Greek Air Force, Vice Air Commodore Papanicolaou, leads arrivals in Athens at a memorial service for people killed during the fighting with Communist forces in 1944. The service at the Makriyianni Gendarmerie headquarters was attended by all the Armed Forces Chiefs.

The Battle of Makriyianni marked the turning point in the struggle for Athens at a time when the Communists had overrun most of Greece and attempted to take Athens itself. As such the barracks are of deep significance to today's Greek leaders.

After the arrival f the armed forces representatives there was a short delay in the open air service while those there awaited the arrival of the new Premier of Greece, Mr. Adamantios Androutsopoulos, a fifty-four years old American educated lawyer and economist.

The memorial to those who died fighting the Communists was the centrepiece of the service. Hundreds of supporters of the X-bands of the pro-Monarchist General Zervas died in the fighting at the barracks twenty-nine years ago. But their death prevented the left-wing Greek resistance Army, ELAS, from taking over, although British troops remained in the country supporting the pro-Monarchists for another six years.
