    ISRAEL'S RED SEA PORT OF EILAT WAS STILL STUNNED TODAY (SUNDAY) BY THE DEATH OF 18 SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS, KILLED WHEN AN ARMY MUNITIONS LORRY EXPLODED ON SATURDAY. THE LORRY, CARRYING LAND MINES BROUGHT BACK FROM THE ISRAELI RAID ON SHADWAN ISLAND, BLEW UP AS IT WAS BEING UNLOADED FROM A LANDING CRAFT.

    THE EXPLOSION, WHICH WOUNDED ANOTHER 42 PEOPLE, IS BELIEVED BY THE ISRAELI AUTHORITIES TO HAVE BEEN ACCIDENTAL. SABOTAGE HAS BEEN RULED OUT.

    ISRAELI DEFENCE MINISTER MOSHE DAYAN VISITED THE INJURED IN HOSPITAL. AND THE AREA AFFECTED BY THE BLAST WAS TOURED BY THE ISRAELI CHIEF OF STAFF, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL HAIM BAR-LEV.

    AS A RESULT OF THE TRAGEDY, ALL PUBLIC PLACES IN THE NORMALLY BUSTLING PORT WERE REPORTED TO BE VIRTUALLY EMPTY.
