  • Description

BATTLE CONTINUED ON THE WESTERN OUTSKIRTS OF SAIGON TODAY (7 MAY) IN WHAT MILITARY SOURCES DESCRIBED A THE KEY DAY OF THE NEW WAVE OF VIETCONG ATTACKS. YESTERDAY (MONDAY) SOUTH VIETNAMESE UNITS MOVED THROUGH THE CAPITAL IN A HOUSE-TO-HOUSE SEARCH FOR VIETCONG, WHO ARE STILL FIGHTING STRONGLY BETWEEN THE TAN SON NHUT AIRBASE AND SAIGON'S CHINESE QUARTER OF CHOLON.

THE HEAVIEST FIGHTING CONTINUES ABOUT FIVE MILES (8 KMS) FROM THE CITY CENTRE, WITH THE GOVERNMENT TROOPS BEING SUPPORTED BY REPEATED BOMBING STRIKES AND INTENSIVE FIRING FROM HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS. AMONG THE LATEST DEAD ARE POLICE COLONEL DAM VAN QUY, OPERATIONS COMMANDER AT THE NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, AND COLONEL LUU KIM CUONG, COMMANDER OF THE TAN SON NHUT AIRBASE - WHERE THE U.S. COMMANDER, GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND; HAS HIS HEADQUARTERS.

TWO MILES TO THE NORTH OF SAIGON'S CENTRE - IN THU DOC, WHERE THIS FILM WAS TAKEN - IT PROVED TOO DANGEROUS FOR CIVILIAN OCCUPATION, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE MAIN BODY OF THE FIGHTING HAS MOVED WESTWARD. THE ENTRY OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE TANKS WAS THE SIGNAL FOR THE REMAINING REFUGEES TO CLEAR THE AREA, BEFORE THOSE HOUSES BELIEVED TO BE OCCUPIED BY VIETCONG WERE BLASTED BY THE 50-CALIBRE GUNS, AND STRAFED BY CONSTANT MACHINE-GUN FIRE.
