  • Description

The touring Soviet Army ice hockey team, the Wings, defeated the Chicago Black Hawks four goals to two on Thursday night (8 January).

The game erupted into some of the most violent scenes so???far experienced in the eight-game series between the Soviets and the eight United States National hockey League clubs.

The Black Hawks appeared to attempt to intimidate the visiting Russians with rough tactics, especially in the second half, but the Russians kept up their fast-passing game which allowed the Black Hawks only 18 shots at goal.

The pattern of the game was set in the opening period when the Russian referee, Yuri Karadin, seemed to show little inclination to call what seemed to be open violations between the two teams.

The game deteriorated into a series of violent confrontations as both sides used sticks and elbows.

One of the top goal tenders in ice hockey, Black Hawks' Tony Esposito, played a superb game in the Chicago net but the accurate passing and setting up by the Russians gave him little chance to alter the final score.

It was fast, elusive, Dick Redman, who saved the dignity of the Black Hawks as he scored Chicago's first goal, high on the glove side of the Russians' Alaxander Sidelnikov.

But the Russians answered with a goal off a Black Hawk skate and Victor Schalilimov made it three-one with a close backhand shot.

Then Liapkin, a Russian defender, scored with a power play for the fourth Russian goal.

In the closing seconds of the game, Dennis Hull beat Sidelnikov on the glove side to make the final score four-two.

The win gave the touring Russians a record of three victories, one loss and a tie.
