  • Description

Sudan's President Jaffar Mohamed Nimeiri has signed an agreement with West germany, giving his country economic aid worth U.S. $55-million (27.5 million pounds). The agreement was signed shortly before President Nimeiri met the West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt on Tuesday (3 October).

SYNOPSIS: President Nimeiri arrived in Bonn on Sunday (1 October), and the following day met President Walter Scheel. The event was attended by a West German guard of honour.

Official statements said President Nimeiri's talks would centre on African affairs and the economic problems facing Sudan. The agreement signed on the third day of his visit will give Sudan U.S. $40 million (20 million pounds) in capital aid, and $15-million (7.5 million pounds) in technical aid.

West Germany is giving the money under terms agreed at the united Nations Special Development Aid Conference in Geneva last March. Sudan has asked West Germany to write off development aid debts granted so far. The Bonn government is expected to make a decision on this next month ( November). Sudan is qualified to make such a request by being one of the world's 30 poorest nations. During his stay, President Nimeiri will also meet businessmen in Cologne. The two Presidents remembered the dead at the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Bonn. Reuters reports that the West German government approves of President Nimeiri's Policy of constructive co-operation with western industrialised nations.
