  • Description

The British aircraft company, Hawker Siddeley announced on Wednesday (29 August) that they will be building a new HS-146 jet air-liner at Hatfield in the United Kingdom. It is Britain's first new airliner for ten years, and the government is contributing half of the anticipated GBP 80 million sterling (200 million dollars) development costs.

The HS-146 will be built in two versions - a 77 sector and a 102 sector - and will be for shorter journeys up to 1200 miles. Designed to replace older turbo-prop aircraft on domestic routes, it will be particularly quiet and will be able to use rough airstrips. It will use jet engines from the Lycoming company in the United States.

The selling price will be around 1/2 million sterling, and the company expect to have sold around 400 by he mid 1980s. The Government was particularly cautious about allocating aid after the financial drain caused by the Concorda Airliner, but the Minister for Aerospace, Mr. Michael Heseltine, said on Wednesday that the new project had excellent prospects of technical and commercial success.
