Background: Italian authorities have rushed 200 tents to the central Italian city of Ascoli Piceno on Monday (27 November), in the first move to house people made homeless by a violent earth tremor on Sunday. Dozens of houses were made uninhabitable when the quake, which measured eight-points on the 12-point Mercali Scale, struck the town and the outlying mountainous regions.

Although damage was extensive, only three people have been reported injured. Thousands of people spent the night huddled round bonfires in the open rather than return to built up areas.

Two hospitals in Ascoli and one in a nearby town were evacuated because of the danger of collapse from the quake and from smaller tremors which followed within hours.

Although full details were not yet in from dozens of outlying towns and villages reported to have suffered serious damage, officials said on Monday that the situation appeared loss serious than it had seemed at first.
