  • Description

Saudi Arabia will take delivery of its third Lockheed Tristar aircraft this month. A fourth will arrive in mid-1977, and another three are on order.

The Tristar, which is now in its fifth year of service, is used by Saudi Arabia for daily services between London and Jeddah and they also serves Cairo, Dhahran, Dubai, Karachi, Paris, Riyadh, and Rome.

The last three to be ordered will have uprated Rolls-Royce RB 211-524 engines with 50,000 lbs thrust specially developed for longer range flying. They will cost an estimated 55 million pounds sterling (100 million U.S. dollars).

The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation has now sold 210 Tristars. In February, March and April this year Tristars set an average dispatch reliability record of 99.2 per cent which means that less than one in 100 scheduled flights was delayed for more than 15 minutes by aircraft malfunction.

Prior to Saudi Arabia's newest addition being delivered it underwent final testing at Lockheed's production centre at Palmdale in California.
