    POLICE USED BATONS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN A CLASH WITH STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS IN SAIGON. THE STUDENTS WERE PROTESTING AFTER A SPECIAL COMMITTEE OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S PROVISIONAL NATIONAL ASSEMBLY DECLARED INVALID THE RESULTS OF LAST SEPTEMBER'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

    THE SAIGON POLICE CHARGED SOME 2,000 STUDENTS AND SPECTATORS MILLING OUTSIDE THE ASSEMBLY BUILDING AND MADE SEVERAL ARRESTS. THE TROUBLE STARTED AFTER ASSEMBLY CHAIRMAN PHAN KHAC SUU EMERGED TO ANNOUNCE THE COMMITTEE'S DECISION.

    THE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE WAS TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE 117-MEMBER ASSEMBLY WHICH BEGAN MEETING YESTERDAY AND WHICH HAD TO TAKE A FINAL VOTE BY TOMORROW (MONDAY) NIGHT ON THE VALIDITY OF THE ELECTION WON BY HEAD OF STATE NGUYEN VAN THIEU.

    ASSEMBLY OFFICIALS SAID THE COMMITTEE SIFTED A TOTAL OF 20 COMPLAINTS OF ELECTION IRREGULARITIES CONTAINING 46 SEPARATE POINTS. EIGHT OF THESE POINTS WERE JUDGED TO BE ILLEGALTIES AND WERE FORWARDED TO THE ASSEMBLY FOR DISCUSSION.

    CHEERING STUDENTS CARRIED MR SUU -- HIMSELF ??? DEFEATED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE -- SHOULDER HIGH WHEN HE CAME OUT OF THE BUILDING TO SPEAK TO THEM.

    POLICE MOVED IN AS THE STUDENTS BEGAN TO SMASH A 19-FOOT (9.6 METRE) WITH ELECTION RESULTS BOARD. THE STUDENTS, FLANKED BY HUNDREDS OF ONLOOKERS, HAD EARLIER MARCHED ON THE ASSEMBLY BUILDING CARRYING REPLICAS OF ELECTION RESULT TABLES DAUBED WITH RED INK. THEY CALLED ON THE DEPUTIES MEETING INSIDE TO ORGANISE A FRESH POLL.
