Background: GENERAL CHARLES DE GAULLE TODAY (MONDAY) EMERGED FROM THE SECLUSION OF HIS HOLIDAY RETREAT FOR A SHORT SCENIC DRIVE AND A WALK ALONG A LONELY WIND-SWEPT BEACH. ACCOMPANIED BY MADAME YVONNE DE GAULLE AND AN AIDE, THE FORMER FRENCH PRESIDENT UNEXPECTEDLY LEFT THE HERON COVE HOTEL IN SNEEM WHERE HE HAS REMAINED BEHIND A TIGHT SECURITY SCREEN SINCE ARRIVING IN IRELAND LAST SATURDAY (10 MAY).

WAITING TELEVISION TEAMS AND NEWSMEN SET OFF IN HOT PURSUIT AS THE GREY HIRE-CAR CARRYING THE GENERAL SWEPT OUT OF THE HOTEL DRIVEWAY AND SET OFF WESTWARDS. BUT A LONG LINE OF POLICE ESCORT CARS PREVENTED ANYONE FROM GETTING CLOSE TO THE GENERAL AND MADAME DE GAULLE.

SECURITY GUARDS SURROUNDING THE ISOLATED HOTEL HAD TODAY BEEN STRENGTHENED FOLLOWING REPORTS THAT DEMONSTRATORS WERE ON THEIR WAS TO SNEEM FROM DUBLIN. BUT THERE WAS NO INFORMATION REGARDING THE IDENTITY OF THE PROTESTORS OR THE REASON FOR THE DEMONSTRATION.

NEWSMEN HAD EARLIER BEEN TOLD BY ONE OF THE GENERAL'S AIDES THAT HE WAS ON A PRIVATE HOLIDAY, AND THIS WAS HOW HE WISHED IT TO REMAIN. THE AIDE WAS ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT DE GAULLE WOULD NOT BE RETURNING TO FRANCE BEFORE THE ELECTIONS WERE OVER.

MEANWHILE, THE VILLAGE OF SNEEM HAS BECOME A CENTRE OF ATTRACTION FOR THE WORLD'S PRESS. TELEPHONES ARE AT A PREMIUM AND THE LOCAL INNS ARE DOING A ROARING TRADE. A LOCAL CERAMICS PAINTER, MRS. ROSEMARY BRADSHAW, DECIDED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ARRIVAL OF SO FAMOUS A VISITOR.
