    THE FIRST WORLD-WIDE UNITED NATIONS SEMINAR ON SPECIAL PROBLEMS RELATING TO HUMAN RIGHTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WAS OPENED IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS WAS PRESENT AT THE MEETING, WHICH IS BEING ATTENDED BY DELEGATES FROM 30 COUNTRIES. THE DELEGATES, ACTING IN A PRIVATE CAPACITY, ARE AT THE SEMINAR IN ADDITION TO OBSERVERS FROM MANY UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATIONS AND INTERNATIONAL BODIES.

    THE SEMINAR IS THE FIRST ON A WORLD-WIDE RATHER THAN A REGIONAL BASIS.

    MR. MARC SCHREIBER, REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE U.N., OFFICIALLY OPENED THE MEETING. HE EMPHASISED THE NEED FOR THE PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS NOT TO BE SACRIFICED FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT.

    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS TOLD DELEGATES: "PEACE CANNOT PREVAIL WHEN THE REMNANTS OF COLONIALISM HAVE NOT BE ERADICATED. THE RESPECT OF HUMAN RIGHTS IS A BASIC FACTOR FOR PRESERVATION OF PEACE IN THE WORLD."
