    JUDGES FIRST ANNOUNCED THAT MOHAMMED ALY WAS THE WINNER, BUT OVER AN HOUR AFTER THE FINISH THE JURY DECLARED THAT HE AND ABDEL KEIF HAD WON TOGETHER WITH THE SAME TIME -- 8 HOURS, 49 MINUTES, 53 SECONDS.

    THE TWO WINNERS AND A THIRD EGYPTIAN, NABIL EL SHAZLY, HAD PLOUGHED ACROSS A CHOPPY GULF OF NAPLES BUNCHED CLOSELY AND ALL FINISHED EXACTLY TOGETHER, BUT EL SHAZLY, THE ONLY AMATEUR OF THE TRIO, HAD STARTED OUT FROM CAPRI FIVE MINUTES EARLIER AND THUS ENDED WITH A FIVE-MINUTE HANDICAP.
