  • Description

The permanent bureau of the Arab Union of Journalists had an extraordinary meeting in Beirut on June 20th, following President Sadat's recent announcements of curbs on Egyptian press and the possible expulsion of any foreign journalists criticising Egyptian Government policies.

SYNOPSIS: The president of the Lebanese Reporters Association, Milhem Karam, spoke first, proposing the formation of a committee to go to Egypt and investigate the conditions of Egyptian journalists.

A new law, which followed last month's national referendum in Egypt, provides for disciplinary measures against Egyptian journalists who criticise the government. Chairman of the Syrian Association of Journalists Saber Falhout was not sure that an investigating committee would have any success while the Sadat regime was determined to pursue this line.

Mr. Naji Hannoush, representing Palestinian journalists, echoed the bitter criticism of President Sadat's speech to the Egyptian Third Army at Suez earlier this month, when he had told correspondents that those who continue doubt-casting campaigns would be expelled.
