  • Description

THE HOLY RIVER GANGES IN BIHAR STATE IN NORTHERN INDIA HAS BEEN POLLUTED BY OIL. THE POLLUTION HAS KILLED SIX PEOPLE AND BROUGHT SEVERE RATIONING TO THE 100,000 PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF MONGHYR.

THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT HAS ORDERED THE SOVIET-BUILT OIL REFINERY NEAR MONGHYR TO CLOSE DOWN. THE LEAK IS BELIEVED TO BE IN A PIPELINE THAT BRINGS OIL TO THE STATE-OWNED REFINERY FROM THE RICH OIL-FIELDS OF ASSAM.

THE PATCHES OF OIL ON THE GANGES HAVE TWICE BURST INTO FLAME, IGNITED BY FUNERAL PYRES BUILT ON THE BANKS BY DEVOUT HINDUS. PILGRIMS COME FROM ALL OVER INDIA TO THE GANGES TO FILL BOTTLES, EARTHENWARE JARS AND TINS WITH WATER WHICH THEY BELIEVE TO BE BOTH SACRED AND MEDICINAL.

BUT THE OIL HAS ROBBED THE HOLY RIVER OF ANY HEALING QUALITIES IT MAY HAVE HAD. IN ADDITION TO THE SIX PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY DIED, AT LEAST 12 OTHERS ARE IN LOCAL HOSPITALS SUFFERING FROM ACUTE DIARRHOEA, NAUSEA AND STOMACH CRAMPS.

THE WHOLE OF MONGHYR'S PIPED WATER SUPPLY IS POLLUTED. WATER TOWERS, RESERVOIRS AND PIPELINES HAVE BEEN CONTAMINATED. THE CITY'S ONLY SOURCE OF USEABLE WATER HAS BECOME THE WELLS IN SURROUNDING VILLAGES. TRUCKS CARRY THE WATER TO THE PEOPLE OF MONGHYR, WHO ARE ALLOWED SMALL QUANTITIES THAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO USE ONLY FOR DRINKING AND COOKING. TWO COLLEGES AND A FACTORY HAVE HAD TO BE CLOSED.
