  • Description

After 21 days and 2,590 miles, Italy's Gastone Nenceni was the individual winner of the gruelling Tour de France cycle race on time aggregate. Another Italian, Graziano Battistini, was second, and the team award went to France.

The last stage - 125 miles from Troyes to Paris - was won by J. Graczyk of France. Emotions ran high as the huge crowd, in holiday mood, welcomed the gallant Frenchman's entry into the capital.

Eighty-one of the 128 riders who set out on the first stage June 26 completed the whole course.

Although never winning a stage, Nenceni's consistency won him the title. His win became almost a foregone conclusion a week ago when Riviere (France), his only serious challenger, crashed in the South of France.
