    HULME'S VICTORY WAS A COMBINATION OF DRIVING SKILL AND GOOD FORTUNE.

    JIM CLARK, DRIVING A LOTUS-FORD LED FOR THE EARLY STAGES OF THE RACE, BUT WAS FORCED TO WITHDRAW WITH A FAULT IN HIS FRONT SUSPENSION.

    THE AMERICAN DRIVER DAN GURNEY TOOK OVER THE LEAD AND HELD IT UNTIL THREE LAPS FROM THE FINISH WHEN HE HAD TO WITHDRAW, LEAVING THE WAY OPEN FOR THE YOUNG NEW ZEALANDER.

    THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE LINED THE TWISTING 14 MILE (22.8 K.M.) CIRCUIT AS THE CONTEST WENT ON BETWEEN THE WORLD'S TOP DRIVERS.

    HULME, HOWEVER, HAD LITTLE DIFFICULTY IN KEEPING IN THE FRONT, AND FINISHED AHEAD OF JACK BRABHAM, ALSO DRIVING A REPCO BRABHAM, HIS TEAM MATE.

    THE RACE WAS OVER 212 MILES (342 K.M.).
