SYNOPSIS: The British army faced rioting crowds of teenagers in Londonderry and Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Tuesday. One soldier was shot dead and three others seriously wounded in the day's violence. The death toll has now reached 37 - nine soldiers and 28 civilians - since hostilities broke out with renewed vigour five weeks ago.

In Belfast on Monday night there was more stone-throwing and sniper fire. Four people were hurt in an explosion inside a house, and four fire-bombs gutted a factory. Firemen could do little to contain the fire. 230 girls and women have lost their jobs. Since the beginning of August, 32 companies have suffered terrorist attacks in Belfast. Ten have stopped production. One has pulled out of Northern Ireland altogether. About 700 people have been made homeless in the past six weeks. The main terrorist attack now seems concentrated on wrecking factories and plants. Mr David blakely, Community Relations Minister at Stormont, said on Tuesday that the terrorists were determined to take away the country's livelihood.
