  • Description

BRITAIN'S NUCLEAR DISARMERS ARE ON THE MARCH AGAIN, JOINING SOME 50 PEACE DEMONSTRATIONS TAKING PLACE IN THE WORLD THIS EASTER. TODAY (FRIDAY) NEARLY 10,000 SUPPORTERS OF THE CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT BEGAN THE SIXTH MARCH FROM THE ATOMIC WEAPONS RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT IN THE SMALL BERKSHIRE VILLAGE OF ALDMASTON. THEIR DESTINATION AT THE END OF FOUR DAYS OF MARCHING - HYDE PARK, LONDON.

BUT THIS YEAR, AS THE MARCHERS - MEN, WOMEN CHILDREN AND BABES IN ARMS, ON BACKS AND IN PRAMS - SET OUT ON THE 60 MILE MARCH, POLICE OFFICERS ARRIVED IN SEARCH OF MYSTERY PAMPHLETS CONTAINING INFORMATION DESCRIBED BY A MINISTRY OF DEFENCE OFFICIAL AS "SERIOUS BREACHES" OF THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT. A NUMBER OF THE PAMPHLETS - THEY DESCRIBE IN DETAIL SOME OF BRITAIN'S PLANS FOR MOBILISING EMERGENCY SERVICES IN THE EVENT OF A NUCLEAR ATTACK - WERE GIVEN AWAY TO ALDERMASTON BAN-THE-BOMB MARCHERS SHORTLY AFTER THEY SET OUT. TONIGHT SCOTLAND YARD'S SPECIAL BRANCH AND M15 WERE HUNTING THE ORGANISATION RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PAMPHLET - A GROUP CALLING THEMSELVES "SPIES FOR PEACE". CANON COLLINS, LEADER OF THE MARCHERS, CONDUCTED A SERVICE BEFORE THE MILES-LONG COLUMN FORMED UP. HE SAID TONIGHT: "I CAN SAY AS A MEMBER OF THE C.N.D. COMMITTEE THAT THE PAMPHLET IS DEFINITELY NOT PRODUCED BY US".

MANY OF THE MARCHERS CARRIED BLUE AND WHITE TINS OF DRIED MILK THAT WILL BE SHIPPED TO ALGERIA FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN. AND AMONGST THE MARCHERS RANKS WERE 750 PEOPLE REPRESENTING 45 FOREIGN COUNTRIES. ONE OF THE MARCHERS WAS A BUDDHIST PRIEST FROM HIROSHIMA, JAPAN, THE REV. GYOTSU N. SATO. HE AND THREE JAPANESE PEACE MARCHERS SET OUT NEARLY 14 MONTHS AGO. THEY HAVE TRAVELLED THROUGH 50 COUNTRIES ON A JOURNEY OF 34,000 MILES. "WE HOPE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS FIRST, THE ALL WEAPONS DOWN TO THE DAGGER," HE SAID.

AWAY FROM THE MARCH TO LONDON, A PARTY OF MORE THAN 50 BRITISH NUCLEAR DISARMERS RAN INTO TROUBLE WITH THE POLICE AT DUSSELDORF, WEST GERMANY, TODAY. THEY REFUSED TO FASTEN THEIR SAFETY BELTS WHEN THEY WERE PUT ON BOARD A CHARTER PLANE AFTER A SIT-DOWN PROTEST IN THE AIRPORT LOBBY. THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT BARRED THE BRITISH DEMONSTRATORS FROM ENTERING THE COUNTRY TO JOIN AN ANTI-NUCLEAR MARCH IN THE INDUSTRIAL RUHR. THE DUSSELDORF POLICE PRESIDENT SAID THE BRITISH MARCHERS WOULD BE SHUT UP FOR THE NIGHT IN THE AIRCRAFT.
