INITIATIVE IN THE RIOTING HAS NOW PASSED FROM BUILDING WORKERS, WHO DEMONSTRATED AGAINST A HOLIDAY BONUS DEDUCTION ON MONDAY, TO THE "PROVOS" - LONG-HAIRED ANARCHIST YOUTHS WHO HAVE BEEN ROAMING THE CITY CENTRE.

THE PARLIAMENT DEBATE ENDED WITH A SHOW OF HANDS REJECTING AN OPPOSITION LIBERAL RESOLUTION ASKING FOR A PROCLAMATION OF A STATE OF ALERT IN THE CAPITAL. THE GOVERNMENT WOULD BE ENTITLED TO ANNOUNCE SUCH A MOVE IF IT CONSIDERED NATIONAL LIFE WAS THREATENED.

TONIGHT'S TROUBLEMAKERS, NUMBERING ABOUT 60, WERE SPEEDILY DISPERSED IN TWO CHARGES BY STEEL-HELMETED POLICE ARMED WITH RIFLES AND TEAR-GAS GRENADE. THE CENTRE OF THE CITY HAS BEEN CORDONED OF TO KEEP AWAY SPECTATORS.
