  • Description

Israel's Prime Minister, Mrs Golda Meir, restated on Wednesday (12 Aug) her country's insistence on obtaining agreed and secure borders in any withdrawal from occupied Arab territory.

Mrs Meir was addressing the Knesset in Jerusalem and answering questions from Government members. When asked what guiding points an Israeli negotiator would have, the Prime Minister referred to her speech in the Knesset last week. It had stated clearly that although accepting the American plan, Israel's insistence on agreed and secure borders was not just a precondition but a basic policy platform for considering withdrawals from occupied Arab territory.

The question asked by a former Cabinet Minister, had been precipitated by U Thant's omission of the proviso in a U.N. report on the reactivation of Dr Gunnar Jarring's mission to guide withdrawal talks. As a result, feelings were tense in Israel until Ambassador Rabin sought clarification in Washington earlier this week. Mrs Meir's answer was followed intently, and appears to have clarified the Government's position.
