  • Description

Argentina's President Maria Estella Peron told a May Day Rally in Buenos Aires on Thursday (1 May) that her government was losing patience with guerrilla violence in the country.

Mrs. Peron speaking under strict security said there was a limit to patience and her government had shown too much patience and understanding.

She was referring to left-wing guerrillas who have contributed to a wave of violence that has claimed nearly 200 lives in recent months. She did not, however, mention any specific move to deal with it.

Strict security was mounted and armed police searched thousands of Argentineans entering the rally ground and non-commercial flights were banned from airfields near Buenos Aires.

And in Mexico City, President Luis Echeverria attended what was described as the world's largest rally on the same day.

Seven hundred thousand workers gathered for the rally which lasted for five hours. Despite fears that workers in dispute over their low wages would create trouble, it was a relatively quiet day, with the exception of a few minor demonstrations.
