  • Description

ISRAELI TROOPS AND POLICE PATROLLED MUCH OF THE OCCUPIED WEST OF THE JORDAN RIVER TODAY (THURSDAY) AS ARABS IN NABLUS AND EAST JERUSALEM STRUCK TO MARK THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF THE SIX-DAY WAR. IN JERUSALEM, ISRAELI TROOPS RUSHED TO THE SCENE NEAR HEROD'S GATE FOLLOWING A GRENADE ATTACK IN WHICH ONE ISRAELI SOLDIER AND FOUR ARAB CIVILIANS WERE INJURED.

THE GRENADE WAS THROWN BY AN ARAB YOUTH FROM THE TOP OF THE ANCIENT CITY HALL NEAR HEROD'S GATE. HEAVILY-ARMED POLICE ARRIVED IN SECONDS AND BEGAN ROUNDING UP SUSPECTS. LATER, THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE CENTRAL COMMANDO, BRIGADIER ZEEVI; AND THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE JERUSALEM AREA VISITED THE SCENE OF THE ATTACK.

IN THE ARAB SECTOR OF JERUSALEM AND NABLUS, ON THE JORDAN WEST BANK, MERCHANTS CLOSED THEIR SHOPS IN RESPONSE TO A STRIKE CALL MADE IN CLANDESTINE LEAFLETS CIRCULATED OVER THE PAST WEEK.

TROOPS PATROLLED THE NABLUS STREETS, PAST SHUTTERED SHOPS AND DESERTED MARKETS. BUS SERVICES OPERATED, BUT THERE WERE FEW PASSENGERS.

LATER, AFTER ISRAELIS WARNED THROUGH LOUDSPEAKERS THAT MERCHANT MIGHT BE IN TROUBLE IF SHOPS DIDN'T RE-OPEN, NABLUS SHOP-KEEPERS TRIED TO RE-OPEN THEIR DOORS. BUT A CROWD OF ARAB YOUTHS, THROWING STONES AND BITS OF WOOD, FORCED THE MERCHANTS TO CLOSE AGAIN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY.

IN RAMALLAH, HOWEVER, THE STRIKE CALL WENT UNANSWERED, AND CHAOS REMAINED OPEN. THE STREETS WERE FULL OF PEOPLE AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY WAS VIRTUALLY NORMAL.

ISRAELI AUTHORITIES GENERALLY FELT THAT ARAB ATTEMPTS TO SPREAD VIOLENCE AND TENSION ACROSS CAPTURED ARAB TERRITORIES WERE GENERALLY SUCCESSFUL.
