Background: The Oakland A's defeated the Cincinnati Rede yesterday (Sunday) to win the 1972 Baseball world Series by four games to three. Playing in their opponents' home field, they captured the title by winning the seventh game 3-2. It is the 69th World Series. This is the first time the A's have won the Series since 1930.
Playing to a capacity crowd of 56,000 at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, the California team were on top for most of the game.
SYNOPSIS: The seventh game of the sixty-ninth World Series, played in Cincinnati on Sunday. A line hit by Oakland is fumbled by Cincinnati's Tolan and picked up by Geronimo. But the game's pattern was set--as the Oakland A's began the domination which gave them the final victory--the first time they've won baseball's major title since 1930. It was no help to Cincinnati that they were playing on their home ground of Riverfront Stadium.
One to nothing Oakland in the second. Odom tries to bunt it to Ball and they have the runner picked off second, its Owens to Menke as they run Duncan back, now to Morgan to Billingham covering at first base, they run him back to second. Green is already at second, Billingham gets the put out as the ref. Finally lets Green go to second.
