  • Description

Hundreds of people from the town of Eleusis in Greece, staged a demonstration on Wednesday (22 October), protesting about the berthing of United States 6th Fleet vessels in their port.

The demonstration was supported by the Mayor of the town, religious leaders, the Athens Communist Party and young Socialists.

They ignored appeals by the Government and the Police to either call off the mass meeting they planned as part of the demonstration, or to hold it indoors.

The demonstrators blamed the officers and men of the United States vessels for the mushrooming of brothels and similar establishments in Eleusis, and demanded their closure by the Government.

One week before the demonstration, the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Karamanlis, had told Parliament that the legal status of American military personnel in Greece would be re-examined. He implied later in his statement that present privileges would be curtailed.
