  • Description

The Anglo-French supersonic airliner Concorde 002 yesterday (Tuesday) completed its maiden demonstration flight over Japan amid continuing criticism of its noise.

The British-built prototype spent an hour and a half flying off the Japanese coast, but during take-off and landing, it drew widespread public complaints over its noise and air pollution potential.

The 002 carried civil aviation and airline officials, and a team of pressmen on the successful demonstration. It is hoped to sell three Concordes in Japan.

During the flight, if flew at twice the speed of sound for about 20 minutes. One Japanese newsman described the sensation as relatively comfortable after breaking the sound barrier.

British and French officials have stressed that Concorde 002 is only a prototype and that the production model will have smokeless, quieter engines.

Watching Japanese transport ministry officials said that Concorde had apparently observed noise-abatement procedures agreed on with authorities before the flight.

SYNOPSIS: The British-built version of the Concorde lands at Tokyo Airport after a one-and-a-half-hour demonstration flight off the Japanese coast. During twenty minutes of the flight, the Concorde double-O-two flow at twice the speed of sound. Mechanically, the flight was successful, but it brought adverse publicity with a public outcry over the aircraft's noise.

The needle-nosed super jet carried civil aviation and airline officials, and a team of pressmen on the demonstration. One Japanese newsman described the sensation during the super-sonic stage of the flight as relatively comfortable. British and French officials are hoping to sell three Concordes to airlines in Japan.

Watching Japanese transport ministry officials said that Concorde had apparently observed noise-abatement procedures agreed on with authorities before the flight.

But the public reaction has been one of criticism, because of Concorde's louder-than-normal engine noise and its potential for polluting Japan's already fouled air.
