    South African Prime Minister Pieter Botha took the unprecedented step of visiting Ulundi, the capital of the Kwazulu homeland, on Monday (6 August). Zule Chief Gatsha Buthelezi had always refused to accept independence for the Zulu homeland on the grounds that it was treachery for blacks to accept independence from a white-ruled republic. But on Monday he received Mr. Botha and was prepared to discuss future policies.

    SYNOPSIS: Prime Minister Pieter Botha and Minister of Co-operation and Development Dr. Piet Koornhof arrived in a cavalcade of cars to a warm welcome by Zulu warriors and dancers.

    Although a colourful reception had been organised, slogan-bearing youths of the Inkatha youth brigade rejecting their "P???eudo-independence" were also in evidence. Mr. Botha was welcomes by Prince Israel Mcwayizeni, a senior prince, a n d Zulu Chief Buthelezi, who commented on Mr. Botha's call for co-operation.
