SYNOPSIS: England's test wicketkeeper Alan Knott brought respectability to his side's first innings total during the first day of play between India and England at Lords, on Thursday.

Here he attacks the bowling f Bedi one of India's most successful spinners, and is rewarded with a six. At one stage England had lost five wickets for only 7I runs.

Knott made 67 before being caught by Wadekar at backward short leg, off the bowling of Venkataraghavan. The wicket fell shortly before the tea break and halted the rate of un-scoring.

Next to fall was England Captain, Ray Illingworth...caught behind by Engineer off Bedi. The Indian fielding throughout the day was of a high standard, with Engineer making some fine saves behind the wickets.

Shortly before close of play John Snow justified his return to the side by taking his score to 51 not-out, the highest in the innings.
