  • Description

On Tuesday (March 16) at the Empire Pool, Wembley in London, British, European and Commonwealth Heavyweight Boxing champion Henry Cooper defends his titles against a man almost 16 years his junior -- 21-year-old Joe Bugner.

Cooper, nearing his 37th birthday, is one of the most popular figures amongst fight fans in the history of the sport. It was he who floored Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay); it was he who have British boxing a revitalised look; it was he who earned, and deserved, the reputation of being a genial gentlemen of the ring, but who, once inside the ropes gave no quarter and expected none.

With Tuesday's important fight looming rapidly on the horizon of his boxing career, Henry Cooper is training hard at the British Boxing Board of Control's gymnasium in the genteel London suburb of Hampstead. Most pundits of pugilism expect Cooper to win -- they believe his experience and ringcraft and trusty left-hook will keep the younger Bugner at bay.

Predictions are for a first-class fight that may well go the entire 15-rounds. Anyway, there will be over 10,000 fight fans at Wembley and countless more watching on cinema closed circuit television on Tuesday -- a large number of them willing "good old Henry" to victory, and hoping that his one weakness; easily cut eyes, won't let him down.
