  • Description

THE TWO AMERICAN AIRMEN, HELD BY THE RUSSIANS SINCE THEIR RECONNAISSANCE PLANE WAS SHOT DOWN OVER EAST GERMANY SEVENTEEN DAYS AGO, WERE FREED TODAY (FRIDAY) AID ACCUSATIONS FROM EAST BERLIN THAT THEY WERE GUILTY OF "ESPIONAGE."
THE AIRMEN - CAPTAIN DAVID HOLLAND, 35, AND CAPTAIN MELVIN KESSLER, 31, WERE DRIVEN TO HANOVER AIRPORT AFTER PASSING THROUGH THE AUTOBAHN CHECKPOINT AT HELMSTEDT. WEARING AIR FORCE BLUE UNIFORMS, THEY LOOKED TIRED BUT FIT AS THEY ENTERED THE PLANE TO FLY TO WIESBADEN.

AS THE AIRMEN WERE DRIVEN ACROSS THE BORDER A STATEMENT ISSUED BY ADN, THE EAST GERMAN NEWS AGENCY, SAID AN INQUIRY HAD SHOWN THAT THEIR RB-66 AIRCRAFT HAD "PURPOSELY, WITH THE AIM OF MILITARY RECONNAISSANCE, VIOLATED THE AIR SPACE OF THE EAST GERMAN REPUBLIC."
IT ACCUSED THE CREW OF HAVING "CONDUCTED ESPIONAGE AND THAT MEANT THEY HAVE CARRIED OUT CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, WHICH UNDER EXISTING LAW IS SUBJECT TO PUNISHMENT." BUT THEIR EXPULSION HAD BEEN AGREED BY THE EAST GERMAN AND SOVIET AUTHORITIES BECAUSE THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT HAD EXPRESSED REGRET AT THE INCIDENT AND NOTED IT WOULD NOT PERMIT ANY SUCH OCCURRENCE IN FUTURE.

AT WIESBADEN, THE U.S. AIR FORCE EUROPEAN HEADQUARTERS, AMERICAN MILITARY POLICE FIRMLY RESTRAINED A LARGE GROUP OF CAMERAMEN AND JOURNALISTS TRYING TO PUT QUESTIONS TO THE TWO MEN. AS WITH THE THIRD MEMBER OF THE CREW, WHO WAS RETURNED ON SATURDAY, NO INFORMATION WAS ISSUED AND NO STATEMENT MADE ABOUT THE MEN'S IMMEDIATE FUTURE.
