    The crew of a Singapore registered cargo ship escaped uninjured on Sunday (11 September) after their vessel was engulfed in flames and rocked by explosions.

    SYNOPSIS: It happened as the ship the 2,000 (tonne) Mesongo was leaving harbour fully loaded with a cargo of rubber and timber.

    Fire fighting tenders from the Singapore Harbour Authority were quickly on the scene. The vessels pumped thousands of gallons of water onto the blaze but couldn't bring it under control. Thick black smoke from burning rubber wafted over the harbour Meanwhile, foam was sprayed in the water around the Mesongo to prevent any pollution.

    Eventually the ship listed heavily after becoming water-logged and within a few hours finally sank. The crew were rescued by boats that had been anchored nearby.
