  • Description

Champion drivers in the sport of Go-Karting, gathered at the Heysham Head circuit at Morecombe, England, last weekend, to take part in the No. 10 World Cup Kart meeting. Saturday was the practice day, and the serious racing took place on Sunday and Monday (26 & 27 May).

The organisers were well pleased by the fact that the maximum entry of 250 was completed well before the closing date. This caused one prominent contestant some anxious moments. Shortly before entry list was due to close, it looked as though Welshman, Graham Liddle of Prestatyn, might not be taking part.

Liddle has won the World Kart Racing Championship four times, but this years his entry form was only received on the final day. By that time the event had already been over-subscribed. However, a late withdrawal allowed him to take his place among the starters.

As well as top drivers from the British Isles competing, there were also karting champions from Sweden, Holland, Denmark, South Africa, Australia and Ireland. The current World Champion, Reg Gange of Worcester Park in Surrey, was also among the favourites to take the title.

But as it turned out, the favourites ended as also-rans. The final, which was held on Monday, turned into an exciting duel between two British drivers, Dave Cullimore of Cheltenham, and Martin A. Hines from Hoddesdon. In a neck-and-neck race, Cullimore eventually overtook Hines on the final bend, and crossed the finishing line to take the Championship title and the prize of GBP 150 (approximately 352 dollars).
