  • Description

An agreement to improve communications between the countries of the West African Economic Community and Europe, was signed in Abidjan on Friday (5 August) by the Telecommunications Ministers of the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Nigeria, and Morocco.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement will mean a further extension to the underwater telecommunications network, which already exists between France and the mostly francophone countries. While it's been relatively easy for them to communicate with Europe, the same could not be said for member countries who wished to communicate with each other. But since 1956 a network of undersea cables began to change the irony. The first link in the chain between Algeria and France was slowly extended through Morocco, Senegal and finally the Ivory Coast. The new agreement will extend the network from Abidjan to Lagos in Nigeria. 54 per cent of all telecommunications between members of the West African Economic Community still must be routed to Europe first. When completed, the new link will eliminate most of the extra cost.
