President Hamani Diori of Niger arrived in Ghana on Saturday (19 May) for a two-day official visit and talks with Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, Ghana's Head-of-State.

Colonel Acheampong, government officials and Niger nationals living in Ghana, greeted the Niger President as he and his wife Aissa disembarked for their 'plane at Accra airport.

President Diori had flown from Togo, which, with Ghana, was on his tour itinerary of several African countries.

After talks with Colonel Acheampong, President Diori told a press conference that there was no reason why African states should not transcend all barriers and form a united economic community.

His talks with the Ghanaian leader was known to centre on economic and trade cooperation between their two countries.

President Diori pointed out that the people of Europe had managed to form the European Economic Community despite two world wars. The linguistic and social barriers against African economic unity were not as strong as most people imagined.
